Solesmes Chant Principles and Korean Phonology: Toward a Practical Korean Psalmody

This dissertation explores how the rhythmic principles of Solesmes Gregorian chant can be effectively integrated with Korean phonology to enhance the performance of Korean psalmody. The study focuses on the application of ictus, arsis-thesis principles, and Korean rhythmic units such as eojeol and madi. A key challenge is adapting the syllable-based and phrase-driven nature of the Korean language to the free rhythm of Gregorian chant. However, the natural prosodic rhythm of Korean-including phrase-final lengthening and flexible grouping-aligns closely with the Solesmes method, particularly the le grand rythme approach. The research traces the development of free rhythm from Dom Prosper Gueranger to Dom Pothier, Dom Mocquereau, Dom Gajard, and Dom Cardine, whose semiological approach brings expressive depth to chant interpretation. This framework is then applied to Korean psalmody to demonstrate how Gregorian chant principles can complement Korean linguistic structures. As a case study, the dissertation analyzes the responsorial psalm composed by Fr. Won Joo Park. It examines rhythmic phrasing, psalm tone structures, and ictus placement, illustrating how Solesmes chant techniques enhance the musical and linguistic integrity of Korean liturgical singing. Ultimately, this study offers a practical performance model for Korean psalmody that honors both the aesthetic ideals of Gregorian chant and the unique phonetic and rhythmic characteristics of the Korean language. It contributes to a broader conversation about adapting Western chant traditions to non-Western languages while preserving theological and musical integrity.<p></p>
