Its fa\u00E7ade measures only ca. 30 m in length, while its depth is 19 m. The building comprises a single storey over an undercroft, but it is topped by a steeply pitched roof pierced by dormer windows, and its small dimensions are further belied by the overhanging turrets crowned by spires at the corners and centres of the long sides. The undercroft of the town hall has a wooden roof supported on four stone columns, but the great hall on the first floor has a fine wooden vault by Jean de Valenciennes (1385-1402) painted by Jacques Averechte (died ca. 1420) and Jacques Zwine. The exterior sculpture filling 48 niches with statues of the counts and countesses of Flanders was destroyed by the French in 1792 (and replaced with modern statues).
