Chapel of Saint Michael, Rocamadour: Detail, altar with Archangel Michael and 12th century frescoes

Rocamadour was a dependency of the abbey of Tulle. The church is part of a larger pilgrimage complex of sanctuaries (Shrine of Our Lady of Rocamadour). The small Benedictine community continued to reserve to itself the use of the small twelfth-century church of Saint-Michel, above and to the side of the pilgrimage church of Notre Dame (ca. 1479). The chapel has well-preserved 12th century Romanesque frescoes, for which it is noted. Below, the pilgrimage church opens onto a terrace where pilgrims could assemble, called the Plateau of St Michel.
