The church is most noted for the triptych altarpiece, Adoration of the Magi, by Peter Paul Rubens, commissioned by the church council in 1616. The present church is largely 15th century, but a chapel was on this site in the 13th century, expanded with choir, a transept and aisles in the 14th century. The explosion of the Zandpoort in 1546 seriously damaged the building. The Twelve-year Truce with Spain (1609-1621) meant that many churches were restored and redecorated.
