It is dedicated to St. Roch, the patron saint of the city of Montpellier where he originated, the healer saint of lepers and pilgrims. It is on the pilgrim route to Santiago de Compostela. The church remains unfinished; the towers lack spires and the planned transept, apses and chapels will not be realized. the facade remains somewhat plain because planned sculptures and tympanum were also not done. Jean Cassan was the architect for the city of Montpellier.
