The palace suffered a major fire, with the result that the facade facing the Plaza Alonso Cano looks like conjoined buildings, one with an Italianate Renaissance style facade (rebuilt in the 18th century) and the other with Plateresque detail. The facades facing the Plaza Bibarrambla are more uniformly Plateresque with Moorish details including some meshrebeeyeh windows. Begun in 1538, the building was meant to house part of the University and the Colegio Imperial de la Santa Cruz de la Fe, founded by Charles V in 1526. After 1769 it housed the Ecclesiastical Curia.
