Jacques Gabriel V designed the cathedral of La Rochelle in 1741 but left its completion to his son. Attached to the chevet of the present cathedral is the late medieval Gothic bell tower of the church of St. Barth\u00E9l\u00E9my (destroyed 1568; this church was rebuilt later, nearby, but the bell tower was incorporated to the cathedral). Jean-Louis Pascal collaborated with the painter William-Adolphe Bouguereau (a native of the city) on the Chapelle de la Vierge in the cathedral (1882). Designated an historic monument, 1906.
