It is the seat of the Bishop of Nancy. The arrival of Duke Leopold (reigned 1697-1729) in the territories that had entered his possession under the Treaty of Rijswijk (1697) resulted in a remarkable period of building. The Primatiale (now the cathedral) was modified by Hardouin Mansart in 1706 (dome and upper fa\u00E7ade, various designs 1721-1728, not executed; towers, completed 1723 and high altar, completed 1728) and completed by Boffrand in 1742.
