The former Palazzo del Podesta was completely renovated in the sixteenth century by Andrea Moroni, after whom it is now named. In the central public spaces the Venetian government began to assert its dominance using classical and triumphal architecture and figurative art. In 1539 work began on the Palazzo del Podestà (now Palazzo Municipale) and the nearby Palazzo del Bò for the university (both by Moroni). Completion took many years as a result of erratic funding by the Venetian government. The imposing façade on to Piazza delle Erbe is on four storeys and is rusticated. The palace was nearly complete by Moroni's death, and a local builder completed the Doric courtyard to his design.
