This Roman bridge of arches built across the River Gardon, 3 km north-west of Remoulins, carries the late 1st-century BCE aqueduct that supplied water from the Fontaines d'Eure, near Uzès, to Nîmes, a distance of 50 km. It remains virtually intact, with three tiers of arches, rising to a height of 48.7 metres above the river, and measuring 273 metres long at the top. Mérimée (1803-1870), as inspector-general of historic monuments, was influential in arranging restoration work in 1843-1850.
