The clock is now removed.\u000a\u000aRennes is the capital of the former Duchy of Brittany; the cathedral is the seat of the Archbishops of Rennes, previously Bishops of Rennes. It is a listed historical monument since 1906. The church has been rebuilt several times; the present church dates mostly from the 17th and 18th centuries. The construction of the west façade of the cathedral stretched from 1540 to 1703. The original interior decoration was in a plain Neoclassical style, but during the 19th century it was extensively refurbished with gilt, stucco and paintings.
