It was the seat of the Ancient Diocese of Comminges. Construction spans the 12th through 16th centuries; Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance styles. It has an attached canons' cloister, a single nave and a large chapel attached to the apse. The sanctuary contains the tomb of Saint Bertrand. The 67 carved wooded choir stalls have been attributed to Nicolas Bachelier, or his school. (Grove notes 'in the 19th century all important Renaissance monuments between Pau and Cahors were unhesitatingly ascribed to him.') The 14th century Gothic additions were financed by Pope Clement V.
