The church was designed in 1851 by Louis Roelandt and built in a simplified form by Jacques Van Hoecke. On June 12, 1866, St. Anne's Church was solemnly consecrated by the Bishop of Ghent, but the church was never completed. It is built in an eclectic style with Romanesque, Byzantine and Gothic elements (Rundbogenstil). In particular the monumental murals inside the church give the interior a unique Eastern or Byzantine ambience. [Dutch language Wikipedia]
