There was an earlier St. Catherine's, but the present building is 19th century, done in revival styles. In 1854, the construction of the chapel began after the docks of St. Catherine Place were filled in. The original area had docks and a fish market, but flooded often, resulting in the need to fill in and reclaim the land. Today there is a square with a Christmas market and a long rectangular park extending north, where the Anspach Fountain has been relocated.
