About 1400 the tower to the right of the portal (south tower) was topped with a Gothic spire made of Balegem stone after a fire.\u000a\u000aThe first wooden church was built ca. 1093 dedicated to St. James. Most likely, the construction was due to the arrival of pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela. After the destruction of this building, a stone Romanesque building was erected ca. 1120. The twin entrance towers date from this period. The octagonal crossing tower from the 13th century was built in the style of the Scheldt Gothic. In the 14th century, they expanded the church with side chapels of the guilds. [Dutch language Wikipedia]
