According to a local tradition and the Golden Legend, the biblical figure Martha visited the area as a missionary and vanquished a local dragon called the Tarasque. The dedication of the Collegiate Church to St. Martha is believed to date from the 9th century or earlier. Relics found in the church during a reconstruction in 1187 were identified as hers, and reburied in a new shrine at that time. There is a 15th cenotaph sculpted by Francesco Laurana. The church still has portions of a sculpted fa\u00E7ade from an indigenous school of 12th century Proven\u00E7al, a rare example of external sculpture of that period.
