So-called Palace of Theodoric, Ravenna: Raking view of building remains

Theodoric, called the Great, more correctly Theodoric, the Goth, was king of the Ostrogoths from 474 and king of Italy from 493 to 526. His palace is depicted in a mosaic in Sant'Apollinare Nuovo, but the actual building is lost. The Palace of Theodoric (Palazzo di Teoderico) is the popular name given to the archaeological remains located close to the church of Sant'Apollinare Nuovo. According to some scholars, the structure visible today is the remains (facade of the narthex) of the church of San Salvatore ad Calchi, built in the 7th -8th centuries and destroyed in 1503. It is also possible that it was one outlying building of the palace complex.
