The town hall, which over the centuries has repeatedly been extended and renovated in 1875 fell victim to demolition. However, the two side buildings were retained: the prison wing from 1634 with stepped gable, and a baroque facade from 1730. Between these two wings a brand new city hall was built with a tall High Gothic style portico and belfry, ca. 1880. This was destroyed in WWI. In the context of reconstruction, architect V. Vaerwyck in collaboration with J. Vierin from Bruges created a town hall in a mixture of Gothic Revival and Neo-Renaissance styles, completed 1923.
