The Chief Sustainability Officer (CSO) role is evolving, with an increasing emphasis on diverse experience and operational knowledge. Successful CSOs must bridge sustainability with broader business strategies and understand both macro-level corporate goals and on-the-ground operational realities. The CEO plays a critical role in setting the tone for sustainability and supporting the CSO. Reporting to the CEO or COO depends on the organization's structure, with the CSO needing emotional intelligence and humility to engage with influential figures. The CSO should influence stakeholders, integrate sustainability into business strategies, and navigate the growing monetization of ESG efforts. As sustainability becomes a core business function, CSOs will continue to guide strategy and ensure accountability in a shifting landscape.
