With nearly 30 years in sustainability, the shift in ESG focus is clear: it's no longer just risk management but integral to value creation for shareholders and society. ESG impacts decisions, particularly in energy companies, where decarbonization and ROI are key. However, there's a need for more confidence in non-financial data, with audit committees focusing on its accuracy and reliability. Finance professionals must bring rigor to ESG reporting. The Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) has helped elevate ESG’s importance, but challenges remain in clearly linking ESG to business strategy and demonstrating its value.
