Abstract This paper discusses the Church's role in the 1964 political crisis in Brazil. It attempts to explain why, after supporting the populist regime from 1956 to 1963, the Church moved into the opposition and helped undermine this regime. The paper proposes a theoretical approach for studying the Church's political role which draws upon Gramsci, Habermas, and Bloch.
