The Colombian Final Accord to End the Armed Conflict and Build a Stable and Lasting Peace (Final Accord) was signed in 2016 by the Government of Colombia and the former Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia—People’s Army (FARC-EP). As monitors of the Final Accord through an official mandate, the Kroc Institute’s Peace Accords Matrix (PAM) released a special report analyzing implementation of accord stipulations related directly or indirectly to the environment. This brief reviews the main findings from the analysis, which covers December 2016 through May 2023, and provides lessons learned and opportunities to continue fostering the environmental implementation of the accord. The brief concludes with policy recommendations, including the need for the Government of Colombia to create a special working group to focus on implementing the accord’s environmental commitments, and for the Government and International Community to ensure that lessons learned from the environmental impacts of the conflict and peace accord implementation are included in future peace negotiations, including the Total Peace negotiations in Colombia.
