The case, Improving Surgical Care in Zambia: Building a National Plan, examines how the government of Zambia developed the first in the world National Surgical, Obstetric, and Anaesthesia Plan (NSOAP) from 2015-2017. The Zambian government incorporated recommendations from the Lancet Commission on Global Surgery to create the first national surgical plan. This plan helped to map a path toward greater availability of safe and affordable surgical and anesthesia care in Zambia, while also helping to lead the way for other countries to develop NSOAPs and improve surgical equity globally.
