Borghesia e società nei novellieri Toscani da Boccaccio a Ser Giovanni, Sacchetti e Sercambi (1378-1424)

In questa tesi vengono studiate le modalità con cui gli autori di novelle toscani del Trecento rappresentano la classe borghese allora dominante, nonché il tentativo che gli stessi compiono di influenzare, tramite le loro raccolte, la caratterizzazione e l’evoluzione sociale e personale dei membri della suddetta classe. Veduto come la questione viene trattata da Giovanni Boccaccio nel suo Decameron (capitolo 1: Introduzione), i tre autori a lui immediatamente successivi – cioè i fiorentini ser Giovanni e Franco Sacchetti, seguiti dal lucchese Giovanni Sercambi – compiono una consapevole operazione di recupero del materiale narrativo utile al loro scopo, per poi riscriverlo e arricchirlo secondo il loro proprio progetto editoriale. I capitoli dal secondo al quarto prendono in esame la questione nelle opere dei tre autori menzionati, studiate nella tesi rispettando l’ordine cronologico di produzione: il Pecorone, il Trecentonovelle, e il Novelliere. Una breve conclusione ripercorre le linee di studio fondamentali trattate nei quattro capitoli precedenti, per poi metterne in risalto i risultati finali.

This dissertation explores representations of the 14th-century bourgeoisie in the short stories of contemporary Tuscan authors. In particular, it examines these writers’ attempts to shape public perception of the upper class in Tuscany and simultaneously influence its members’ social and personal evolution through their works. Following Giovanni Boccaccio’s groundbreaking treatment of the subject in his Decameron (chapter 1: Introduction), three more Tuscan writers – the Florentines ser Giovanni and Franco Sacchetti, and the Lucchese Giovanni Sercambi – each engaged in conscious efforts to reappropriate and rewrite Boccaccio’s narrative material in accordance with their own social preoccupations underpinning their literary projects. The second to fourth chapters examine how issues of social class and attitudes toward them are treated in the magnum opuses of the three aforementioned authors: the Pecorone, the Trecentonovelle, and lastly the Novelliere. A brief conclusion traces the fundamental lines of study covered across the four chapters, before highlighting the findings of this study.
