Ave Atque Vale, translating as “Hail and Farewell,” is a phrase that, in words, accurately describes the paradigm that travel stations ought to embody, and once did. This counter-proposal to the Charlotte Gateway Station recovers the Threshold by memorializing the sacrifice of North Carolinians during World War I and magnifying the importance of the journey, from day-to-day commuting to the sojourn of life as a whole. Thus, the Charlotte Memorial Gateway Station will embody Ave Atque Vale and be a threshold of transportation, memory, urban life, and true civicism.
