Politics and wine don't mix: reconciling contradictions in Arrian's Anabasis

Arrian presents two conflicting summaries of Alexander the Great's character in his Anabasis. This thesis explains how this conflict can be resolved through analysis of Arrian's identity as a Roman Greek, his reliance on the classical literary tradition, and the social and political background of the second century A.D.
