RESTORING AN URBAN EDGEA VOCATIONAL AND CULTURAL CENTER IN OLD TOWN LAMU, KENYA

This thesis looks at the idea of the term ‘character’ in the field of architecture and the different ways in which character is manifested in a place. Using Old Town Lamu as a case study, it investigates the manifestations of architectural character in plan and elevation, ornamentation and, decoration and in massing and construction materials. With that in mind, the design proposal will demonstrate at the urban and building scale how to design in a way that respects the architectural character of a place.
