This thesis explores how rehabilitations can define, reinforce, and foster public engagement in national historic landmark districts and landmark parks in urban centers in the United States. Through the case study of the rooftop rehabilitation of the Odd Fellows Building in Sweet Auburn, a National Historic Landmark District that was adversely impacted by the construction of Interstate 75/85 in the mid-20th century in Atlanta, Georgia, it presents how a research-driven approach can influence design interventions that better preserves architectural integrity and strengthen historic urban fabric.
