    In April 1528 Francis I commissioned Gilles Le Breton for a programme of building (completed 1540) at Fontainebleau. The Cour de l'Ovale was to be rebuilt using the old foundations and retaining the old keep, while a gallery, now the Galerie François I, was to be constructed linking this with the Trinitarian abbey to the west, which was soon demolished and replaced by the Cour du Cheval Blanc.     The tympanum and sculpture of the central portal of the west façade was carved in 1856-1857 by Pascal. The original had been destroyed in 1793, and only a few silhouettes remained. The subject of the tympanum is the Last Judgment and some of its iconography is copied from nearby Autun.

    Built between 1528 and 1530, it measures about 60 meters long and 6 meters wide. The Gallery links the apartments of Francis to the Chapel of the Trinity. The decoration is by Rosso Fiorentino, 1535-1537.

    Le Vau proposed in 1668 a plan which preserved the original château at the centre, surrounding it by an ‘enveloppe’, which entirely screened it from the garden side but left it visible from the courtyard.     The left portal (Porte St-Jean) is an important survivor of the 12th-century Early Gothic period. The tympanum depicts the martyrdom of St. John the Baptist. In the lower register, Salome performs a balancing act (like a medieval jongleur) before King Herod, John is executed, and his head is presented on a platter. The upper register illustrates the legend that John was taken into heaven in ecstasy just before his death.

    This has been attributed to Jean Goujon. However, the marble sculptures on the tomb (1544) of Louis de Brézé, husband of Diane de Poitiers, do not correspond to Goujon’s style in execution; it is possible that he provided only the design for this remarkable two-storey classical structure, which has Corinthian columns on the lower tier and pairs of caryatids articulating the upper register.
