    Abstract:

There is renewed interest in irrigation to help build climate resilience in sub-Saharan on the part of governments and donors. However, many previous irrigation investments have significantly underperformed. In this brief we consider the factors that are associated with irrigation system performance for two different types of systems: surface water irrigation schemes with many irrigators and groundwater pumping systems adopted by individual farmers. Surface water schemes that take advanta…

    Abstract:

Worsening global water insecurity drastically impairs the health and livelihoods of communities throughout the world, while further endangering interlinked ecosystems in our planet. This is especially true in areas impacted by water-intensive, yet critically needed, industries like the mining, beverage, garment, and agriculture sectors. Within these industrial spaces, any effective water stewardship strategy or allocation plan must consider the human right to water. This paper introduces the …

  • Abstract:

Human trafficking in Guatemala occurs in various forms and places, many of which are hidden or hard to discern. Labor trafficking is especially difficult to pinpoint given that the fraud, coercion or force involved may be hidden in plain sight. From fields full of laborers harvesting sugarcane to solitary domestic workers, there are few visible signs to differentiate an at-will worker from a victim of trafficking. And the problem is growing - estimates of labor trafficking globally have incre…

    Abstract:

The effects of climate change will require Tajikistan to transition or diversify from hydroelectric power, which provides 95 percent of its energy, to other kinds of renewable energy. Although transition or diversification away from hydroelectric power is necessary, it will come at the expense of jobs and economic challenges in the region. To overcome these challenges, Tajikistan will need to implement a just transition mechanism to other forms of renewable energy. This policy brief provides …

    Abstract:

Many water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) interventions have traditionally implemented monitoring and evaluation plans that use a narrow set of WASH indicators that reflect a 20th-century prioritization of microbiological water quality as the most important proxy for WASH intervention success. Even when water is microbiologically safe, there are often substantial structural, behavioral, and institutional barriers to access. Measures of WASH intervention success should incorporate these impac…
