    Abstract:

In his inaugural lecture for the Mirza Family Professorship of Islamic Thought and Muslim Societies, Ebrahim Moosa explores how the concept of progress has been understood in Islamic thought and the challenges that this notion of progress poses to European and American conceptualizations of the term. Beginning with a biographical sketch of his grandfather in South Africa and Muzzafar Mirza, after whom the endowed chair for this inaugural address is named, Moosa traces in these lives and in th…

    Abstract:

An estimated 103,000 undocumented immigrants reside in Indiana, the vast majority of whom have no pathway to obtain legal authorization to drive. This restriction makes life significantly harder for undocumented residents, who must constantly weigh the universal need to drive against the risk of a traffic infraction or accident leading to a citation for driving without a license. But such a restrictive licensing regime is also detrimental to all legal residents of Indiana, who pay the price o…

    Abstract:

As climate changes, coastal homeowners are potentially crucial actors in reducing the risks to property and human life from rising seas and increased hurricane activity. Absent strict, enforceable regulations mandating retrofitting of existing homes or major changes in homeowner insurance requirements, coastal resilience in a changing climate will largely reflect private, voluntary decisions of millions of individuals. However, research is scarce on the current risk level of U.S. coastal home…
