    Abstract:

As climate changes, coastal homeowners are potentially crucial actors in reducing the risks to property and human life from rising seas and increased hurricane activity. Absent strict, enforceable regulations mandating retrofitting of existing homes or major changes in homeowner insurance requirements, coastal resilience in a changing climate will largely reflect private, voluntary decisions of millions of individuals. However, research is scarce on the current risk level of U.S. coastal home…

  • Abstract:

Understanding the growth dynamics of the microbubbles produced by plasmonic heating can benefit a wide range of applications like microfluidics, catalysis, micro-patterning and photo-thermal energy conversion. Usually, surface plasmonic bubbles are generated on plasmonic structures pre-deposited on the surface subject to laser heating. In this work, we investigate the growth dynamics of surface microbubbles generated in plasmonic nanoparticle (NP) suspension. We observe much faster bubble gro…

    Abstract:

Disclosed are then inorganic membranes having a defined topography that includes pores having a defined diameter of nanometer and sub-nanometer diameter. The thin membranes are resistant to protein denaturing agents, and may be employed in analytical and clinical methods for identifying single amino acid residues within the sequence of a protein and the pores are other than NspA pores. Methods for making a thin inorganic membrane with nanopore and sub-nanopore topography and conical cone stru…

    Abstract:

Provided are nanowire-coated fibers and compositions comprising one or more nanowire-coated fibers and methods of making the fibers and compositions. The fibers can be organic or inorganic fibers. The nanowires can be metallic or semiconducting nanowires. The nanowires are disposed on at least a portion of a surface of a fiber or fibers. The fibers and compositions can be used as barcodes (e.g., for anti-counterfeiting methods). The fibers and compositions also can be used as photodetectors (…

    Abstract:

A method for fabricating nanostructured polymeric materials based on a combination of inkjet printing and template synthesis. Layer-by-layer assembled nanotubes can be synthesized in a polycarbonate track-etched (PCTE) membrane by printing poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) and poly(styrenesulfonate) (PSS) sequentially. By changing the printing conditions, polymeric nanotubes or nanowires can be prepared by printing poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) in a PCTE template. Inkjet printing paired with t…

  • Abstract:

The present invention relates to DNAzymes (also known as deoxyribozymes, DNA enzymes, catalytic DNA, or DZ), which are conjugated to nanoparticles (NP) to facilitate the detection of nucleic acids. One aspect of the invention relates to compounds comprising DNAzymes conjugated to nanoparticles (DZ-NP), such as metallic or gold nanoparticles, and methods for their synthesis. Another aspect of the invention relates to methods of using the conjugated compounds to detect nucleic acids, such as ge…
