    Abstract:

This paper presents a technique for the low-cost fabrication of plasmonic fiber-optic based refractive-index sensors. The Microsphere Photolithography (MPL) technique was used to pattern nanoholes in a thin aluminum film to create Extraordinary Optical Transmission (EOT) based sensors on the cleaved tip of SMF-28 optical fibers. This technique uses self-assembled microspheres as an optical element and facilitates very low-cost patterning of the plasmonic probes. As the refractive index of the…

    Abstract:

Sc has been employed as an electron contact to a number of two-dimensional (2D) materials (e.g. MoS2, black phosphorous) and has enabled, at times, the lowest electron contact resistance. However, the extremely reactive nature of Sc leads to stringent processing requirements and metastable device performance with no true understanding of how to achieve consistent, high-performance Sc contacts. In this work, WSe2 transistors with impressive subthreshold slope (109 mV dec−1) and I ON/I OFF (106…

    Abstract:

The seed-mediated growth of noble metal nanostructures with planar geometries requires the use of seeds lined with parallel stacking faults so as to provide a break in symmetry in an otherwise isotropic metal. Although such seeds are now routinely synthesized using colloidal pathways, equivalent pathways have not yet been reported for the fabrication of substrate-based seeds with the same internal defect structures. The challenge is not merely to form seeds with planar defects but to do so in…

    Abstract:

This work presents results of macro, micro, and nanoscale surface characterization for a set of Roman denarii, ranging from 136 BCE to 240 CE, using large-scale X-ray fluorescence (XRF) mapping, particle-induced X-ray emission (PIXE) spectroscopy, focused-ion-beam-assisted scanning electron microscopy (FIB-SEM) with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The combination of XRF and PIXE, with varying beam energies, allowed for visualization and quantification of individual elements as a functio…

    Abstract:

We report the results from the investigation of the mechanisms of self-sustained reaction in mechanically induced TiN/B nanocomposites. The exothermic displacement reaction, 3B + TiN → BN + TiB2, with an adiabatic reaction temperature of 1905 K, was initiated through two different means: localized thermal heating and mechanical stimulation by high-energy ball milling. Comprehensive studies strongly indicate that the chemical interaction in the system involves three main stages. Solid-state ma…
