    Abstract:

Laura Sill and Andrea Langhurst presented this slide presentation at the 2013 Annual Conference. Jaron Kennel, originally scheduled to present, was unable to make the conference, but he contributed insights into his role maintaining and developing some of the mechanisms discussed. The presentation focused on the value of order request data, data not typically captured by integrated library systems available in 2013, and advocated for greater use of this data to assist collection development…

    Abstract:

This policy brief was developed to assist decision-making in the field of international development on when and how to best utilize data science methods. It is meant to assist all levels of decision-making (from the field to the boardroom) as well as development actors (from donors to community-level NGOs). This general applicability stems from a research focus on general principles and processes that can be adapted as needed. The recommendations include a general decision-making process that…

    Abstract:

Our digital collections, exhibits, sites, and content have grown in an ad-hoc fashion, resulting in a proliferation of access systems without a unified strategy. As a result, library website users are presented with links with similar language: words like “exhibit” and “collections” appear in link labels without clear differentiation and cause confusion for both internal and external users. In this presentation, we will describe our process for testing different link language, creating a unif…

    Abstract:

In rural Chiapas, Mexico, poor patients often struggle to accesss surgical care and other medical treatment, even though access is guaranteed by law under the Mexican constitution. This case examines an innovative approach developed by Compañeros en Salud to accompany patients from rural communities through the health care system. By walking with patients through each step of a complex system, the organization in turn gains insights to barriers that can be addressed in a more systemic fashion…

    Abstract:

Over the past 20 years, the creation of databases of digitized climate records have made invaluable resources available to study climate change. Beginning in 2000, NOAA’s Climate Database Modernization Program digitized climate related records resulting in the creation of 56 million climate-related images. The Climatological Database for the World’s Oceans (CLIWOC) project digitized and transcribed ships’ logbooks that recorded weather data during their voyages. These entries provide rese…

    Abstract:

The opportunistic pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) produces several redox-Active phenazine metabolites, including pyocyanin (PYO) and phenazine-1-carboxamide (PCN), which are electron carrier molecules that also aid in virulence. In particular, PYO is an exclusive metabolite produced by P. aeruginosa, which acts as a virulence factor in hospital-Acquired infections and is therefore a good biomarker for identifying early stage colonization by this pathogen. Here, we describe the…

    Abstract:

This article presents a case study in which one library designated Product Owners to steer a website redesign project. The Product Owner, commonly used in agile approaches to software development, plays an important leadership role in the development process. In the case described here, two faculty librarians were selected to co-lead the project. This article outlines the benefits of using Product Owners and the factors that led to the two librarians being put on the project. The authors exp…
