    Abstract:

Fecal indicator bacteria currently employed for microbial water quality management are poor representatives of viruses. Viral water quality indicators have recently been proposed based on the human gut bacteriophage crAssphage and the food virus pepper mild mottle virus (PMMoV) due to their high abundance in sewage and association to human waste. Here, we develop a model relating crAssphage and PMMoV abundance to risk of swimmer illness in a recreational water contaminated with fresh, untreat…

    Abstract:

The attoliter volumes and confinement abilities of zero- dimensional nanopore-electrode arrays (NEAs) hold considerable promise for examining the behavior of single nanoparticles. In this work, we use surface- enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) in tandem with amperometry in order to monitor single Ag Raman-sentinel nanoparticles transported to and captured in single nanopores. To that end, highly ordered solid-state NEAs were fabricated to contain periodic arrays of nanopores, each housing a si…

    Abstract:

We report the results from the investigation of the mechanisms of self-sustained reaction in mechanically induced TiN/B nanocomposites. The exothermic displacement reaction, 3B + TiN → BN + TiB2, with an adiabatic reaction temperature of 1905 K, was initiated through two different means: localized thermal heating and mechanical stimulation by high-energy ball milling. Comprehensive studies strongly indicate that the chemical interaction in the system involves three main stages. Solid-state ma…
