    Abstract:

In this paper, we present results demonstrating the effect of temperature on singular- ity matching (SM) tunneling down to 300 mK in superconducting single-electron transistors (SSETs). The studied SSETs have charging energies significantly larger than the Josephson energy, which makes it possible to study the SM condition with- out other sub-superconducting gap conduction mechanisms obscuring the SM signa- tures at low biases. The presence of parity in one such device has also allowed us to …

Introduction: Mechanical stimulation of bone is necessary to maintain its mass and architecture. Osteocytes within the mineralized matrix are sensors of mechanical deformation of the hard tissue, and communicate with cells in the marrow to regulate bone remodeling. However, marrow cells are also subjected to mechanical stress during whole bone loading, and may contribute to mechanically regulated bone physiology. Previous results from our laboratory suggest that mechanotransduction in marrow …

    Abstract:

GaN PolarMOS is a vertical power transistor incorporating the unique polarization-induced bulk doping scheme in III-nitrides for the body p-n junction. We report the realization of this device, wherein the vertical channel, source contact, and body contact regions are successfully formed using three steps of selective-area epitaxial regrowth, all by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). The fabricated PolarMOS has an excellent on-current of >500 mA mm−1 and a specific on-resistance of 0.66 mΩ · cm…

    Abstract:

The unique and diverse features of uranyl peroxide nanoclusters may contribute to the enhanced mobility of uranium in the environment. This study examines the sorption of the uranyl peroxide nanocluster [UO2(O2)(OH)]6060‑ (U60) to Na-montmorillonite (SWy-2), plagioclase (anorthite), and quartz (SiO2) as a function of time, U60 concentration, and mineral concentration. SWy-2 was studied in both its untreated form as well as after two different pretreatments, denoted as partially treated SWy-2 a…

    Abstract:

Potassium volatility and activity in a novel K-Ca-Si-O glass catalyst was investigated over extended periods of soot oxidation. Soot was continuously deposited and oxidized by maintaining a glass catalyst-coated filter at temperatures above the oxidation balance point to provide a soot mass equivalent to 100 000 miles of engine operation. Testing revealed the 52-SiO2, 35-K2O, and 13-CaO wt % glass catalysts show a significant improvement in soot oxidation performance over a Pt catalyst. The g…

    Abstract:

The future of the aerospace industry is directly related to the development and modernization of the heat-loaded components of hypersonic aircraft: jet engines, nose tips and sharp leading edges of the wings, which are required to withstand ultrahigh temperatures (above 2000°C) caused by aerodynamic heating. The greatest practical interest for the aerospace industry is centered around ultra-high temperature ceramics based on borides, nitrides, carbides, carbonitrides and double transition met…

    Abstract:

This paper presents a technique for the low-cost fabrication of plasmonic fiber-optic based refractive-index sensors. The Microsphere Photolithography (MPL) technique was used to pattern nanoholes in a thin aluminum film to create Extraordinary Optical Transmission (EOT) based sensors on the cleaved tip of SMF-28 optical fibers. This technique uses self-assembled microspheres as an optical element and facilitates very low-cost patterning of the plasmonic probes. As the refractive index of the…

Abstract: Rechargeable magnesium sulfur (Mg/S) batteries suffer from fast capacity fading due to difficulty of reoxidation of MgS and the polysulfide shuttle. Other works have reported that use of Cu current collectors or CuS at the cathode improves cycleability. Here we investigate Cu nanoparticles grown on carbon nanofibers (Cu@CNF) as an additive for the Mg/S battery cathode to test the effects of Cu metal on capacity and rate performance at controlled Cu loading. The Mg/S battery with Cu …

    Abstract:

In this study, we measured the effect of EPS on Cd and proton adsorption behaviors by measuring the extent of adsorption onto biomass with and without the EPS removed via a cation exchange resin. We conducted both Cd adsorption experiments and potentiometric titrations of biomass using three common bacterial species: one Gram-positive (Bacillus subtilis) and two Gram-negative (Shewanella oneidensis, Pseudomonas putida) species. The Cd adsorption experiments were con- ducted as a function of m…

    Abstract:

Development of anion-exchange membranes (AEMs) with selectivities among anions may expand the applications of these membranes in salt separations. This work shows that layer-by-layer coating of aliphatic polyamide AEMs with poly(4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS)/protonated poly(allylamine) (PAH) films enhances Cl − /SO 42− dialysis selectivities, and the extent of this enhancement depends on the source-phase salt concentrations. For a source phase containing 0.01 M NaCl and 0.01 M Na 2 SO 4 and a rec…

Conspectus Electrochemical measurements conducted in confined volumes provide a powerful and direct means to address scientific questions at the nexus of nanoscience, biotechnology, and chemical analysis. How are electron transfer and ion transport coupled in confined volumes and how does understanding them require moving beyond macroscopic theories? Also, how do these coupled processes impact electrochemical detection and processing? We address these questions by studying a special type of c…

    Abstract:

Two high nuclearity uranyl cages were crystallized in high yield under mild solvothermal conditions using rigid aryl phosphonate ligands. These compounds are prepared either through an in situ phosphonate ligand condensation reaction or via serendipitous assembly with a bulky phosphonate ligand. Firstly, the flexibility of the phosphonate ligands enhances the curvature of the uranyl polyhedra in the assembly of both compounds. Secondly, the formation of bent pyrophosphonate ligands through te…
