The Peace Agreement signed between the Government of Colombia and the Armed Revolutionary Forces of Colombia (FARC-EP) in November 2016 has been recognized as one of the most comprehensive peace agreements signed following civil conflict. According to the Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies, as of November 2020, 28 percent of the Agreement’s commitments were fully implemented and an additional 18 percent had an intermediate level of implementation, which overall is considered good …

    Abstract:

In addition to botanical specimens, [Edward Lee Greene (August 20, 1843–November 10, 1915)] collected rare books and herbals on pre-Linnean botany. He began building his personal library early in his career as a botanist, and by the time his career was drawing to a close, he felt that his library was “the pioneer among American collections of pre-Linnaean, and rare though important post-Linnaean, books of botany.” He managed to assemble an excellent collection of journals, monograp…

In January 2020, the EPA plans to issue a supplement to its 2018 proposed rule, Strengthening Transparency in Regulatory Science. The revised rule may prohibit the EPA from using any research for which underlying raw data and models are not made public. In the December 6, 2019 issue of Science, Dr. Marie Lynn Miranda, Director of CEHI, provided explanation of why such a rule would jeopardize regulations that aim to keep the environment a safe place for all of us to live.

    Abstract:

As climate changes, coastal homeowners are potentially crucial actors in reducing the risks to property and human life from rising seas and increased hurricane activity. Absent strict, enforceable regulations mandating retrofitting of existing homes or major changes in homeowner insurance requirements, coastal resilience in a changing climate will largely reflect private, voluntary decisions of millions of individuals. However, research is scarce on the current risk level of U.S. coastal home…

    Abstract:

Creating an accountability group is a way to extend one of the benefits of dissertation camp: You build a community of people around you who are doing the same thing, which compels you to stay focused on your work. Many students who are wrapping up their camp experience ask about how to form their own ongoing writing group. This document seeks to introduce some ways to do this to ensure understanding of the goals and working styles to which your group agrees. Through mutual understanding and …

    Abstract:

The sudden, if predictable, transformation of Ireland from its brief moment as an island of immigrants back into what for so long it always was, a nation of emigrants, demands the re-interrogation of a term that for a brief time came to seem a natural way to address Ireland’s global migrations. The application of the term diaspora to people of Irish descent living outside Ireland is, after all, of relatively recent date and replaces a term that has been quite resonant in the Irish vocabular…
