    Abstract:

We investigate lifting projective representations in matrix Lie groups to unitary representations. After establishing preliminary notions, we discuss finite- and infinite-dimensional representations of matrix Lie groups, emphasizing the relationship between SU(2) and SO(3) and thus providing applications in quantum physics. The application of cohomological methods in studying the lifting of projective representations is then highlighted, along with the concept of one-dimensional central exten…

After the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) delivered more than $1.5 trillion in economic relief to low-income families during the pandemic, Capital Hill widened its policy window for more government assistance to go through the tax system. This memorandum identifies five factors policy advocates should consider as they work to expand new or existing anti-poverty programs (APPs) through the IRS. Each of these factors are responsible for the political sustainability of IRS-administered APPs like …

    Abstract:

Minimal surfaces are an object within differential geometry. Differential geometry is a field of mathematics which studies geometric objects that can be described by smooth, i.e. infinitely differentiable maps. These geometric objects are called manifolds. Within this context, minimal surfaces are manifolds which minimize area among all surfaces with the same boundary. This leads to minimal surfaces playing a role in the study of partial differential equations, as this minimal area correspond…

    Abstract:

Einstein’s theory of general relativity is, fundamentally, a theory about the geometry of the universe. The mathematical framework for the theory is found in the study of pseudo-Riemannian geometry, a generalization of, the much more commonly studied, Riemannian geometry. The first half of this thesis is devoted to the study of pseudo-Riemannian geometry, and in the remaining half we study general relativity itself as well as a few classical applications of the theory.

Research serves as an essential function for educating undergraduate students in the College of Science. Undergraduates at Notre Dame have the opportunity to tackle pressing research questions alongside accomplished faculty in world class laboratories and facilities. At the core of Scientia’s mission is to provide a platform for undergraduates to participate in the dissemination of their research efforts. As Sir Mark Wilport, the United Kingdom’s chief scientist explains, “Science is not fi…

    Abstract:

An estimated 103,000 undocumented immigrants reside in Indiana, the vast majority of whom have no pathway to obtain legal authorization to drive. This restriction makes life significantly harder for undocumented residents, who must constantly weigh the universal need to drive against the risk of a traffic infraction or accident leading to a citation for driving without a license. But such a restrictive licensing regime is also detrimental to all legal residents of Indiana, who pay the price o…

In order to ensure that the University of Notre Dame supports its employees with fair wage policies in the future, the Raising the Standard Campaign proposes that the University of Notre Dame adopt the following policies: increase student wages to $15 per hour, institute a cost of living adjustment (COLA) for all Notre Dame workers, create a Notre Dame Just Wages and Fair Employment Board, enhance educational benefits, revisit retirement benefits, celebrate employee appreciation week, and imp…

Since its establishment in 2009, Scientia has been an inclusive journal community dedicated to supporting and celebrating the scientific research of undergraduate students at Notre Dame. The students and faculty advisors of our journal work together to provide a voice for emerging scientists of all types, and we believe that students should have the opportunity to professionally engage in scientific publishing and editing. We welcome submissions of student research in any discipline in the …

Editor’s Note: “Podcast America” focused on telling about America’s past and present through listening to and creating podcasts. One of the central goals was to examine how students can include more varied identities in the stories we tell about America, especially in terms of race, class, gender, and sexuality. The class explored different topics and narrative forms by listening to a wide variety of podcasts, from This American Life and 1619 to This Day in Esoteric Political History and 99% …

From introduction: “The chant started in the northern end of the stadium. It was faint at first, but it soon grew into a deafening roar as thousands of fans inside Stade de Lyon cried “EQUAL PAY!” during the closing seconds of the US Women’s National Team’s (USWNT) 2019 World Cup victory. Moments later, millions more fans watched on television as Nike aired an advertisement celebrating the players as leaders “fighting not just to make history, but to change it – forever” (1). This outpou…

    Abstract:

From introduction: “Most of history’s fashion controversies have a common denominator: they involve women. Many of these controversies consist of women donning attire less restrictive than that which society permitted them. Tennis has been one of the most regulated sports in the U.S., especially since women started playing in the late 19th century. Both the clothes men permitted them to wear and the scrutiny towards that attire have detracted from their playing and ultimately from the co…

From introduction: “In the late 1960s, the Civil Rights Movement struggled in pursuit of social justice and equal rights under the law for Black Americans in the United States. At the forefront of the movement were artists like David Hammons, who used their work to progress the cause. Hammons resided in and around Watts during the 1960s, a key battle ground in the fight for equality. As a result, his work was politically driven and rooted in the Civil Rights and Black Power Movement. Dav…
