    The choir, raised above a crypt, consists of a short, straight bay preceding a polygonal apse with an ambulatory. The choir arcades, which increase in height towards the apex, rest on clustered piers; the gallery, which was reconstructed after the earthquake, has a single opening screened by tracery bars, which are extensions of the clerestory mullions.

    The sculptures of the Last Judgment were the only statues in the Münster to survive the iconoclasm of the Protestant Reformation. The 47 large free-standing statues are replicas (the originals are in the Bern History Museum), and the 170 smaller figures are all original. They were all sculpted by Erhard Küng.

    Built on a rocky outcrop 50 metres above the river Sarine (Saane). In 1924 the former parish church became a cathedral. Built in four campaigns between 1283 and 1490.     The marble high altar of the presbytery was built in 1532 by Baldassarre Peruzzi. The enormous bronze ciborium is the work of Vecchietta (1467-1472, originally commissioned for the church of the Hospital of Santa Maria della Scala, across the square, and brought to the cathedral in 1506).     Description:

    Unlike most cathedrals, the cathedral of Perugia has its flank [side] on the city’s main square, facing the Fontana Maggiore and the Palazzo dei Priori. This side has the Loggia di Braccio commissioned by Braccio da Montone (1423), an early Renaissance structure attributed to Fioravante Fioravanti from Bologna. The main façade faces the smaller Piazza Dante and has a baroque portal designed by Pietro Carattoli in 1729. The sturdy campanile was constructed in 1606-1612.

The new façade was begun (ca. 1110-1125) by Rainaldo and his workshop, who probably also lengthened the nave by three bays. The cathedral was consecrated in 1118 under Pope Gelasius (reigned 1118-1119). The façade was possibly completed ca. 1165 by Guglielmo and his school.
