    Abstract:

Thermoelectric generators are an environmentally friendly and reliable solid-state energy conversion technology. Flexible and low-cost thermoelectric generators are especially suited to power flexible electronics and sensors using body heat or other ambient heat sources. Bismuth telluride (Bi2Te3) based thermoelectric materials exhibit their best performance near room temperature making them an ideal candidate to power wearable electronics and sensors using body heat. In this report, Bi2Te3 t…

    Abstract:

Perovskite nanocrystal superlattices (NC SLs) are the nearest real-world approximations to monodisperse NC ensembles. NC SLs thus represent ideal model systems for evaluating the optical and structural stability of CsPb(I1−xBrx)3 NCs at a macroscopic level. Here, photoinduced changes to CsPb(I1−xBrx)3 NC SLs (0 < x < 1.0) are probed via in situ photoluminescence, X-ray diffraction, and electron microscopy. We find that prolonged (∼10−20 h) ultraviolet−visible irradiation causes irrevers…

    Abstract:

We explore the consequences of nonthermal plasma-activation on product yields in catalytic ammonia synthesis, a reaction that is equilibrium-limited at elevated temperatures. We employ a minimal microkinetic model that incorporates the influence of plasma-activation on N2 dissociation rates to predict NH3 yields into and across the equilibrium-limited regime. NH3 yields are predicted to exceed bulk thermodynamic equilibrium limits on materials that are thermal-rate-limited by N2 dissociation….

    Abstract:

We have employed atomic layer deposition to produce uniform films of Bi 2Se 3, which is a 3D topological insulator (TI), over 5 cm × 5 cm SiO 2-coated Si substrates. The crystalline properties of the films were characterized via Raman spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction, cross-sectional transmission microscopy, and atomic force microscopy, which confirmed the high quality of the films. The TI properties were examined using Hall bridge structures and recording magnetoresistance at 1.9 K. A weak an…

    Abstract:

A method for the nanofabrication of periodic arrays of gold nanostars yielding a unique morphology of relevance to SERS applications. With arms radiating from a central core, gold nanostars represent a unique and fascinating class of nanomaterials from which extraordinary plasmonic properties are derived. Despite their relevance to sensing applications, methods for fabricating homogeneous populations of nanostars on large-area planar surfaces in truly periodic arrays is lacking. Herein, the f…

    Abstract:

Spreading resistance microscopy (SRM) was used to study nanoscale variations in electronic and structural properties of an ultrathin near-surface GaN/AlN quantum well (QW). In the SRM images of the growth surface of the GaN/AlN QW heterostructure, an inhomogeneous current contrast was detected in the form of disk-like regions of increased conductivity with the sizes in the range of 50–160 nm and a density of 1.7 109 cm 2 . Analysis of the current contrast dependence on the polarity of the sam…

    Abstract:

High-throughput combinatorial investigations are transforming materials discovery, phase diagram development, and processing optimization. Thin-film deposition techniques are frequently used to fabricate sample libraries employed in these studies. Various adaptations of well-known thin-film chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and physical vapor deposition (PVD) techniques utilized for the synthesis of inorganic combinatorial thin-film materials libraries are reviewed, with novel processing approa…

    Abstract:

GaAs-based microdisk lasers with an active region representing a dense array of indium-rich islands (InGaAs quantum well-dots) were studied using direct small-signal modulation. We demonstrate that using dense arrays of InGaAs quantum well-dots enables uncooled high-frequency applications with a GHz-range bandwidth for microdisk lasers. A maximum 3 dB modulation frequency of 5.9 GHz was found in the microdisk with a radius of 13.5 μm operating without a heatsink for cooling. A modulation curr…

    Abstract:

The size of an ion affects everything from the structure of water to life itself. In this report, to gauge their size, ions dissolved in water are forced electrically through a sub-nanometer- diameter pore spanning a thin membrane and the current is measured. The measurements reveal an ion-selective conductance that vanishes in poresThe size of an ion affects everything from the structure of water to life itself. Abstract:

We used transmission electron microscopy, Raman, and photoluminescence spectroscopy to identify the effect of CuPt-type GaP-InP atomic ordering (AO) on the structural and emission properties of self-organized (SO) InP/GaInP2 Wigner molecule (WM) quantum dot (QD) structures. We found that the correlation of AO and SO growth results in the formation of InP/GaInP2 QD/AO-domain (QD/AOD) core-shell composites. This observation shows that intrinsic WMs in this system emerge due to a strong piezoele…

    Abstract:

Icosahedron and [Au25(PPh)10(C6H14S)5Cl2]2+ bi-icosahedron clusters were synthesized. Ligand exchange reactions were carried out with a new coumarin-derived fluorophore (Cou-SH) to label both clusters. Labeled and unlabeled Au25 were compared and the changes in the electronic structure were determined. The labeled clusters showed marked changes in electronic states, as evidenced by the quenching in the UV region and enhancement in the near infrared. The quantum yield from Cou-SH decreased and…
