    Description:

This tool calculates the design loads on a reinforced concrete special moment frame with a corrugated galvanized iron roof, determines force and moment demands through an approximate portal frame analysis, assesses load combinations, evaluates the capacity of members compared to the demands, and approximates the cost of needed construction materials. It was produced by MSCE student Christianos Burlotos in order to parametrically assess frames to determine the best-fit frame for single-family …

    Description:

This multilayered spreadsheet is used to assist aspiring homeowners design their home from a pre-set list of options for floorplans, finishes, fixtures, and basic services. It also rapidly calculates an estimated total cost for the structure as well as a corresponding monthly payment amount. This allows the design process to be performed iteratively, giving families autonomy in the design of their own home, the chance to consider a variety of options and combinations, and the immediate knowle…

This tool calculates the design loads on a reinforced concrete special moment frame with a concrete slab roof, determines force and moment demands through an approximate portal frame analysis, assesses load combinations, evaluates the capacity of members compared to the demands, and approximates the cost of needed construction materials. It was produced by MSCE student Christianos Burlotos in order to parametrically assess frames to determine the best-fit frame for single-family homes in Leog…

    Abstract:

Silver nanofilament formation dynamics are reported for an ionic liquid (IL)-filled solid polymer electrolyte prepared by a direct-write process using a conductive atomic force microscope (C-AFM). Filaments are electrochemically formed at hundreds of xy locations on a ≈40 nm thick polymer electrolyte, polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEGDA)/[BMIM]PF6. Although the formation time generally decreases with increasing bias from 0.7 to 3.0 V, an unexpected non-monotonic maximum is observed ≈2.0 V. …

    Abstract:

Loss of integrin-mediated attachment to extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins can trigger a variety of cellular changes that impact cell viability. Foremost among these is the activation of anoikis, caspase-mediated cell death induced by ECM-detachment. In addition to anoikis, loss of ECM-attachment causes profound alterations in cellular metabolism that can lead to anoikis-independent cell death. Here, we describe a surprising role for serum and glucocorticoid kinase-1 (SGK1) in the promotion …

    Abstract:

hydrophobic (i.e., Hoechst 33342) dyes or drugs, including a binary dye/drug pair (i.e., indocyanine green/mitoxantrone). The core of HBPn, containing a mixture of uncharged 2-pentanone chains and 1,2,3-triazole rings, could be loaded with uncharged and very hydrophobic dyes (i.e., Nile Red) or drugs. Improved aqueous solubility of camptothecin was achieved 10-fold from 8.4 to 75 ng/mL. Additionally, cell toxicity studies showed that HBPn was able to release the camptothecin drug inside A549 …

    Abstract:

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is characterized by the degeneration of upper and lower 36 motor neurons, yet an increasing number of studies in both mouse models and patients with 37 ALS suggest that altered metabolic homeostasis is a feature of disease. Pre-clinical and clinical 38 studies have shown that modulation of energy balance can be beneficial in ALS. However, our 39 capacity to target specific metabolic pathways or mechanisms requires detailed understanding 40 of metabolic dysr…

    Abstract:

Governments around the world adopt transparency reforms to facilitate accountability. In principle, open proceedings provide citizens with valuable information to evaluate elected officials’ decisionmaking, which incentives lawmakers to follow mass preferences when choosing policies. However, the public’s general lack of knowledge and engagement with the political process may weaken the power of open information, and perhaps instead allow citizens and groups with extreme views to exer…

    Abstract:

In early twentieth-century France, a vast network of artists, writers, and religious seekers were drawn to Roman Catholicism’s elaborate panoply of symbols centered on suffering. A preoccupation with affliction dominated the movement now known as the French Catholic revival, or the renouveau catholique—considered a watershed in the history of the modern Catholic Church and the “golden age” of French Catholicism. In Sacred Dread, Brenna Moore examines the life and writings o…

    Abstract:

Do Christianity and modern liberal democracy share a common moral vision, or are they opposed and even hostile to each other? In Christian Faith and Modern Democracy, Robert Kraynak challenges the commonly accepted view that Christianity is inherently compatible with modern democratic society. Contrary to conventional wisdom, Kraynak argues that there is no necessary connection between Christianity and any form of government and that, in many important respects, Christianity is weakened by …
