    Abstract:

Bone is one of the most common sites for metastasis across cancers. Cancer cells that travel through the vasculature and invade new tissues can remain in a non-proliferative dormant state for years before colonizing the metastatic site. Switching from dormancy to colonization is the rate-limiting step of bone metastasis. Here we develop an ex vivo co-culture method to grow cancer cells in mouse bones to assess cancer cell proliferation using healthy or cancer-primed bones. Profiling soluble f…

    Abstract:

In this paper, we present results demonstrating the effect of temperature on singular- ity matching (SM) tunneling down to 300 mK in superconducting single-electron transistors (SSETs). The studied SSETs have charging energies significantly larger than the Josephson energy, which makes it possible to study the SM condition with- out other sub-superconducting gap conduction mechanisms obscuring the SM signa- tures at low biases. The presence of parity in one such device has also allowed us to …

    Abstract:

Background: Collagen-based scaffolds reinforced with hydroxyapatite (HA) are an attractive choice for bone tissue engineering because their composition mimics that of bone. We previously reported the development of compression-molded collagen-HA scaffolds that exhibited high porosity, interconnected pores, and mechanical properties that were well-suited for surgical handling and fixation. The objective of this study was to investigate these novel collagen-HA scaffolds in combination with huma…

    Abstract:

[Context and motivation] With the rise of cyber-physical systems (CPS), smart ecosystems, and the Internet of Things (IoT), software-intensive systems have become pervasive in everyone’s daily life. The shift from software systems to ubiquitous adaptive software-intensive systems not only affects the way we use software but further has an impact on the way these systems are designed and developed. Gathering requirements for such systems can benefit from elicitation processes that are conducte…

    Abstract:

The deposition of InxGa1 – xAs with an indium content of 0.3–0.5 and an average thickness of 3– 27 single layers on a GaAs wafer by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) at low temperatures results in the appearance of thickness and composition modulations in the layers being formed. Such struc- tures can be considered to be intermediate nanostructures between ideal quantum wells and quantum dots. Depending on the average thickness and composition of the layers, the wavelength of the…

    Abstract:

GaAs photovoltaic converters containing quantum well-dot (QWD) heterostructures are studied. The QWD properties are intermediate between those of quantum wells (QWs) and quantum dots. The QWDs are obtained by the epitaxial deposition of In0.4Ga0.6As with a nominal thickness of 8 single layers by metal-organic vapor phase epitaxy. QWDs are a dense array of elastically strained islands that localize carriers in three directions and are formed by a local increase in the indium concentration and/…

    Abstract:

Though numerical methods to find all the isolated solutions of nonlinear systems of multivariate polynomials go back 30 years, it is only over the last decade that numerical methods have been devised for the computation and manipulation of algebraic sets coming from polynomial systems over the complex numbers. Collectively, these algorithms and the underlying theory have come to be known as numerical algebraic geometry. Several software packages are capable of carrying out some of the operati…
