- Abstract:
The high sensitivity and functional group selectivity of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) make it an attractive method for enzyme sensing, but there is currently a severe lack of enzyme substrates that release SERS reporter molecules with favorable detection properties. We find that 2-mercaptopyridine-3- carbonitrile (o-MPN) and 2-mercaptopyridine-5-carbonitrile (p-MPN) are highly effective as SERS reporter molecules that can becaptured by silver or gold nanoparticles to give intense …

- Abstract:
A novel hydrated magnesium uranyl germanate, Mg[(UO 2 ) 2 (Ge 2 O 6 (OH) 2 )]·(H 2 O) 4.4 , has been synthesized under hydrothermal conditions at 200 °C. The orthorhombic unit-cell parameters are a =10.829(6), b =7.625(4), c =16.888(10) Å, V =1394.5(1) Å 3 , space group Cmcm , Z =4. The crystal structure is based on β-U 3 O 8 -type sheets of corner- and edge-sharing U 6+ O 7 pentagonal bipyramids. The GeO 3 (OH) tetrahedra and GeO 4 (OH) trigonal bipyramids are linked to form [Ge 2 φ 8 ] dior…

- Abstract:
Abstract: Rechargeable magnesium sulfur (Mg/S) batteries suffer from fast capacity fading due to difficulty of reoxidation of MgS and the polysulfide shuttle. Other works have reported that use of Cu current collectors or CuS at the cathode improves cycleability. Here we investigate Cu nanoparticles grown on carbon nanofibers (Cu@CNF) as an additive for the Mg/S battery cathode to test the effects of Cu metal on capacity and rate performance at controlled Cu loading. The Mg/S battery with Cu …

- Abstract:
GaN PolarMOS is a vertical power transistor incorporating the unique polarization-induced bulk doping scheme in III-nitrides for the body p-n junction. We report the realization of this device, wherein the vertical channel, source contact, and body contact regions are successfully formed using three steps of selective-area epitaxial regrowth, all by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). The fabricated PolarMOS has an excellent on-current of >500 mA mm−1 and a specific on-resistance of 0.66 mΩ · cm…

- Abstract:
Additive Manufacturing (AM) of low-profile 2.5D glass structures is demonstrated using a fiber-fed laser-heated process. In this process, glass single mode optical fibers with diameters 90-125 μm are fed into the intersection of a workpiece and CO2 laser beam. The workpiece is positioned by a four-axis CNC stage. Issues unique to the process are discussed, including the thermal breakdown of the glass and index inhomogeneity. Scanning electron microscopy reveals that the core/cladding structur…

- Abstract:
This paper studies the use of Microsphere Photolithography (MPL) as an alternative to Focused Ion Beam milling or e-beam lithography to pattern plasmonic fiber-optic based sensors. In the MPL approach, silica microspheres are self- assembled to form a Hexagonal Close-Packed (HCP) array on top of a layer of photoresist. The microspheres serve as an optical element and focus collimated UV radiation to an array of photonic jets inside the photoresist layer. The exposed region is dependent on the…

- Abstract:
In this study, we measured the effect of EPS on Cd and proton adsorption behaviors by measuring the extent of adsorption onto biomass with and without the EPS removed via a cation exchange resin. We conducted both Cd adsorption experiments and potentiometric titrations of biomass using three common bacterial species: one Gram-positive (Bacillus subtilis) and two Gram-negative (Shewanella oneidensis, Pseudomonas putida) species. The Cd adsorption experiments were con- ducted as a function of m…

- Abstract:
Detailed mechanistic understanding of the optoelectronic features is a key factor in designing efficient and stable photoelectrodes. In situ spectroelectrochemical methods were employed to scrutinize the effect of trap states on the optical and electronic properties of CuI photoelectrodes and to assess their stability against (photo)electrochemical corrosion. The excitonic band in the absorption spectrum and the Raman spectral features were directly influenced by the applied bias potential. T…

- Abstract:
MAPbBr3 and MAPbI3 films cast onto glass slides and physically paired together undergo halide exchange to form mixed halide films. The change in halide composition in these two ∼130 nm thick films occurs concurrently with Br− diffusing toward the MAPbI3 film and I− diffusing toward the MAPbBr3 film. The diffusion of these halide species, which is tracked through changes in the absorption, offers a direct measurement of thermally activated halide diffusion in perovskite films. The increase in …
