    Abstract:

The National Digital Stewardship Alliance surveyed practitioners in 2012 and again in 2017 to gauge, among other things, how satisfied they were with their organizations’ digital preservation function. This study seeks to understand what causes the high and rising levels of dissatisfaction that practitioners reported. We interviewed 21 digital stewards and asked them to describe the organizational context in which they work; to reflect on what aspects of their organizations’ approach to digit…

    Abstract:

Estimating a massive drive time matrix between locations is a practical but challenging task. The challenges include availability of reliable road network (including traffic) data, programming expertise, and access to high-performance computing resources. This research proposes a method for estimating a nationwide drive time matrix between ZIP code areas in the U.S. - a geographic unit at which many national datasets including health information are compiled and distributed. The method (1) do…

    Abstract:

Understanding the environmental justice implications of the mortality impacts of air pollution exposure is a public health priority, as some subpopulations may face a disproportionate health burden. We examined which residential environmental and social factors may affect disparities in the air pollution-mortality relationship in North Carolina, US, using a time-stratified case-crossover design. Results indicate that air pollution poses a higher mortality risk for some persons (e.g., elderly)…

In January 2020, the EPA plans to issue a supplement to its 2018 proposed rule, Strengthening Transparency in Regulatory Science. The revised rule may prohibit the EPA from using any research for which underlying raw data and models are not made public. In the December 6, 2019 issue of Science, Dr. Marie Lynn Miranda, Director of CEHI, provided explanation of why such a rule would jeopardize regulations that aim to keep the environment a safe place for all of us to live.

    Abstract:

Background - Growing physician maldistribution and population demographic shifts have contributed to large geographic variation in healthcare access and the emergence of advanced practice providers as contributors to the healthcare workforce. Current estimates of geographic accessibility of physicians and advanced practice providers rely on outdated “provider per capita” estimates that have shortcomings.

Purpose - To apply state of the art methods to estimate spatial accessibility of physic…

    Abstract:

OBJECTIVES: Chiropractic care is a service that operates outside of the conventional medical system and is reimbursed by Medicare. Our objective was to examine the extent to which accessibility of chiropractic care affects spending on medical spine care among Medicare beneficiaries.

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study that used beneficiary relocation as a quasi-experiment.

METHODS: We used a combination of national data on provider location and Medicare claims to perform a quasi-experi…

    Abstract:

A method for the nanofabrication of periodic arrays of gold nanostars yielding a unique morphology of relevance to SERS applications. With arms radiating from a central core, gold nanostars represent a unique and fascinating class of nanomaterials from which extraordinary plasmonic properties are derived. Despite their relevance to sensing applications, methods for fabricating homogeneous populations of nanostars on large-area planar surfaces in truly periodic arrays is lacking. Herein, the f…

    Abstract:

The residential construction industry in developing nations is often plagued by numerous constraining systems, including underdeveloped financial markets, ineffective governing bodies, and unregulated material and labor markets, which restrict safe and disaster-resilient housing to the wealthy minority. The majority are left in nonengineered, informally constructed homes, which, in countries with high exposure to hydro-meteorological and/or seismic hazards, can prove deadly. The thesis presen…

    Abstract:

Subject faculty sometimes limit information literacy when they ask a librarian for “the library talk.” On the librarian’s end, this unimaginative request translates into a traditional one-shot, often focused on point-and-click skills rather than building deeper competencies. The authors developed a collaboration rubric to liberate librarians from this deadlock. The rubric uses nine lenses to focus the librarian-instructor collaboration on relevant sub-categories that display various instructi…
