Town Hall, Diksmuide: Overall view, the tower and church of St. Nicholas is behind and to the right

The town hall, which over the centuries has repeatedly been extended and renovated in 1875 fell victim to demolition. However, the two side buildings were retained: the prison wing from 1634 with stepped gable, and a baroque facade from 1730. Between these two wings a brand new city hall was built with a tall High Gothic style portico and belfry, ca. 1880. This was destroyed in WWI. In the context of reconstruction, architect V. Vaerwyck in collaboration with J. Vierin from Bruges created a town hall in a mixture of Gothic Revival and Neo-Renaissance styles, completed 1923.
