This is actually two attached palazzi owned by branches of the Contarini family, the most powerful family in Venice. The Palazzo Contarini degli Scrigni was built 1609-1616 by the architect Vincenzo Scamozzi. In its flat, pilastered classical façade, Scamozzi formulated an original version of the traditional Venetian type of residential building, achieved through a combination of Serlian models and a formal vocabulary derived from Sansovino but reduced to the level of superficial decoration. This had considerable influence on the following generation of architects, particularly Longhena. The Palazzo Contarini Corfù is older (15th century) and built in the Venetian Gothic style (restored in the 18th and 19th centuries). Today the buildings are the private residence of the Rocca family.
